If these 5 exact metrics are not available, SHI adapts by incorporating other measurable data points (e.g., mortality rates, food availability, migration counts). This ensures every system can still produce a valid pulse, even if substitutions are required.

External pressures (like weather, supply chain, or human activity) and any extra variables outside the Core 5 can be added for + CAD $500 each.

• No cost up front. We first assess the data available for your system.

• If data is incomplete, we deliver a Flashlight Report instead of a full Compass Pulse.

What the Flashlight Does

The Flashlight isn’t a placeholder — it’s a targeted diagnostic. It:

• Identifies which variables are measurable today.

• Highlights critical blind spots where data is missing.

• Recommends what data to track going forward so a full Pulse can be achieved.

• Still provides an action plan so you know where to focus now.

This way, you’re never paying for an empty report. You either get the Compass Pulse you asked for, or a Flashlight scan that maps the path to it. Either outcome delivers insight and moves your system closer to measurable health.

Flashlight by SHI (Targeted Scan)

• Flat fee: CAD $1,200

• Includes:

  • Assessment of up to 5 key variables

  • Identification of blind spots where data is missing

  • Short action plan with next steps for data collection & resilience

• Upgrade path: If new data becomes available, the Flashlight can be expanded into a full Compass or Pulse report, with the Flashlight fee credited toward the upgrade.
